Carl Walden was the pilot. school, the Future Business Leaders of Ahierica at West Craven High School have been quite busy. In October, we entered a booth at the Craven-Carteret- Pamlico County Fair and came away with a second place award. On. October 10, 48 FBLA members attended a district meeting at Kinston High School. The new members got a chance to participate in their first district meeting and every member, old and new, learned many useful skills. This year the FBLA has a record membership of 103 had their monthly meeting. At this meeting, Ms. Donna Willis, the Executive Director of Junior Achievement, came and spoke to the FBLA members. Ms. Willis stated that the Junior Achievement Chapter is a non-profit organization for high school students that promote the free enterprise system. There are 36,900 Junior Achievement Chapters across the nation. Our local Junior Achievement Chapter meets one night a week in Vanceboro. The FBLA will meet again on Wednesday, December 5. You can tell Deer Season Is open as Milton Harris poses by a 9 point deer bagged by his uncle Bud Harris just off Highway 43 near the home of Gulon Dawson. The deer’s rack was 14 Inches high and 14V2 Inches between the beams. Last year Mr. Harris bagged an eight pointer with a 16 inch high rack and 18% Inches between the beams. CCC Students Awarded Carolina Telephone Scholarships Mr. Will Thomas (left). Now Bom District Commercial Manager of t^ollna Telephone and Telegraph Co., with Scholarship ,.(^iers, Nancy Danes, Jean Brown, and Haywood Fonville. Three Craven Community College students have been awarded scholarships from the Tarboro-based Carolina Telephone and Telegraph Company. These scholarships are part of the "Carolina Telephone Scholarship Program” that was established in 1983 at the 26 community and technical colleges in the company's 50 county service area. The recipients who received $500 scholarships each are: Nancy Danes, of New Bern, a student in drafting and design technology; Haywood Fonville, son of Haywood and Velma Fonville, New Bern, student in electrical engineering technology; and Jean Brown, of Havelock, a student in the pre-liberal arts program. This scholarship program, which Carolina Telephone regards as an investment in the future of eastern North Carolina, is directed primarily at minority students and displaced workers retraining for new skills. This year the program includes additional scholarships directed toward minority students in college transfer programs. Rotary Hears Asst. District Manager The Vanceboro Rotary Club had the opportunity to hear more about social security from Mr. Charles Fryer, Assistant District Manager, of the New Bern office. Mr. Fryer gave information about the 3.5% increase in social security benefits which will be reflected in January 1985 checks. He explained that along with the increase there would be a $15.50 increase in medicare coverage as of January. According to Mr. Fryer a retired person under 65 in 1985 can earn $7320 without losing any part of their benefits. During 1984 the figure for under 65 is $5160 and those over 65 can earn $6960 without penalty. The penalty is one dollar for each two dollars earned over the maximum said Fryer. Mr. Fryer gave the Rotary members an opportunity to ask questions. One member found he might be eligible for additional income due to his military. Several other questions were directed to Mr. Fryer and he was quick with the answers. Football Contest Winners 11th Week First Place - Christine Kite (11- 4), $20 and 6 points.
